A Backyard Covid Wedding & A Pinterest Success

Last August, my cousin texted me that her boyfriend proposed in the middle of a sunflower field and she was engaged! After months of pinning and prepping, the date was set for mid-August and the countdown began. The bridal shower was planned, the bachelorette booked and every last wedding detail had been decided… just in time for Covid to hit.

The original wedding has been moved to next August, but they didn’t want to delay making it official. Instead, they planned a small backyard wedding at my Aunt & Uncle’s house with immediate family and the bridal party.

The night before the wedding, we set up chairs and decorated tables with white tablecloths and the gold sequin runners from my wedding. We added LED tealights in glass votive candle holders and sunflower centerpieces.

We wanted a little area where people could take photos so we found this pin on Pinterest and I set out to recreate it. With Apothic wine, fishing line, embroidery needles and carnations from BloomsByTheBox, we were ready to go! Each string was 6-7 feet long and took about a half hour to string. We started with a few feet of fishing line so we would have room to tie.

Flower by flower, we tied a knot, strung the fishing line through the flower and tied another knot to hold in place. When I first started, I planned on having all of the flowers go in the same direction, but I liked the dimension of the flowers facing different ways so I pierced from the top of the flower, bottom of the flower and side of the flower as I alternated carnations. When all of the strands were strung, we placed a piece of wood between two trees and hung the flowers from there.

The plan was to head to Sasco Beach in Fairfield for a quick ceremony and head back to the house for tacos, drinks, and cake. As luck would have it, the beach was completely packed so they made a last minute decision to get married in front of the flower backdrop.

It certainly wasn’t the original wedding that they had planned but it was a beautiful evening surrounded by their closest friends and family, and now we’re all looking forward to spreading love (not germs) next summer!
