I have a love affair with dry shampoo. There, I said it. I used to wash my hair every day and I would feel like I conquered the world when I finally adjusted to every other day. Now, I can easily go three or four days without washing. Here are my tips for training your hair, plus all of the best dry shampoo products.
Tips for training your hair:
- Be patient. Like I said, I used to wash my hair every day. This was not an overnight adjustment. It look a lot of patience, product trial and error, and not-so-great hair days. You really have to train your scalp to product less oil, but my hair is healthier and grows quicker than before.
- Start slow. Do whatever you can to extend one more day before washing. Start with a Sunday night wash, and try to make it through the first few workdays. Plan around days where you don’t have to have great hair.
- Switch it up. Your hair/scalp will adjust to a product and it will become less effective over time. Keep a few different dry shampoos in rotation. Try a bunch until you get the best dry shampoo for you.
My hairdresser — Melissa Mezzanotte at Salon Mezzmerize — recommends washing every three days. I typically try to wash my hair Sunday nights and then either Wednesday or Thursday night depending on how my week is going and what weekend plans I have. Day 2 and 3 hair tend to be my better hair days, so I try to time them right if I’m going out. If things are really crazy during the week, I can make it through the entire work week. Here are my go-to hairstyles, by day:
Day 1: Blowout or Straightened
Day 2: A few loose curls.
Day 3: Loose textured curls.
Day 4: Topknot or Ponytail.
Day 5: Topknot or Sock Bun.
Now, let’s talk about products. Like I said, you’re going to have to try a few to find what works for you, but these are the best dry shampoos I’ve tried:
The best dry shampoo products:
1. Batiste is a great everyday option. It’s super affordable, and there is a tinted option for brunettes.
2. Oscar Blandi Pronto is my FAVORITE. It’s lightweight, it smells amazing and it works really well.
3. Loreal Extraordinary Clay Dry Shampoo works really well, but you have to use it sparingly and I always save it for the last day before washing. You can read a full review of the Loreal Extraordinary Clay line here.
4. Kérastase V.I.P. isn’t technically a dry shampoo, but it works like one on day 2 hair.
