An Honest Review of HelloFresh

This is a totally honest, not sponsored, review of HelloFresh. This post does contain affiliate links, so if you decide to sign up, you’ll get $40 off of your first box and I’ll get $20 off of my next box. So, thanks in advance for dinner 😉

One year ago today we tried HelloFresh for the first time. While the date isn’t particularly memorable, the meal was, and it happened to come up on my Facebook memories today so I figured I would put together a post to share with all of you. In full transparency, I have not tried any other meal subscription services, so I really don’t have much to compare it to, but, here’s everything we love (and don’t love) about HelloFresh.

Over the last year, we’ve ordered 12 boxes. We don’t have any dietary restrictions and found that there were plenty of choices on the HelloFresh menu each week. There are options for two or four people and you can select three, four or five meals. We’ve always selected the Classic Plan with three meals, for two people. They come out to $9.99 per serving, which is definitely a little pricey compared to what it would cost to get the ingredients ourselves at the grocery store, but sometimes convenience is worth the higher price tag. Because it’s only two servings, we typically don’t have leftovers for Pete’s lunch the next day. This isn’t a huge deal, but it is something to keep in mind.

The recipes are definitely unique, but not too outside of our comfort zone. We tend to get into a dinner rut and HelloFresh is great for switching things up. We’ve gotten so much inspiration over the last year from our HelloFresh dinners, and we’ve incorporated a few recipes into our dinner lineup since. All of their burger recipes are really interesting and we’ve found a bunch of new ways to make pork chops. Ignore the fact that I am definitely not a food blogger and that this was taken with an iPhone for Facebook posting purposes only:

HelloFresh Review

Pineapple Pork Chops with Snap Peas and Jasmine Rice

Some of our favorite recipes are the Pineapple Pork Chops with Snap Peas and Jasmine Rice, the Hot ‘N’ Hearty Chicken Pizzas with Zucchini, Italian Herbs, and Chili Flakes and one of the recipes from our latest box, the Argentine Chimichurri Steak with a Sweet Potato, Poblano, and Tomato Jumble.

Each meal comes with step-by-step recipe cards with pictures. The ingredients have always been really fresh and the fact that everything is pre-portioned definitely cuts down on prep time and cleanup. The timing on the recipes is pretty accurate and although there’s a variation in cooking times, most of them take about 30 minutes.

Their app is really awesome and their customer service is excellent as well. They’ve helped me update my meal selections numerous times when I’ve forgotten to pick my meals. That said, our last few deliveries have been late. If it comes Tuesday at 9pm, we’re stuck having HelloFresh dinners on Wednesday, Thursday and a weekend night… and I hate cooking on the weekend.

Overall, we’ve had a great experience with HelloFresh and we’ll definitely keep it in rotation to switch things up. If you want to give it a try, and get $40 off your first box, sign up here.

They also have a Wine Club which I’m really interested in trying out. Have you tried HelloFresh? Comment below and let me know if you’ve tried any meal (or wine!) subscriptions and which ones you love!
